xx messenger update — Account Backup

Today, we are excited to announce that we are launching the first big feature update for the xx messenger — Account Backup.

Upon updating your messenger, within settings you will now be able to select your own cloud service provider to backup your account. This will allow you to set a recovery password and store an encrypted backup of your account on that provider.

This backup contains your username and your contacts. It currently does not backup chats, group chats, or requests. Once a backup is restored, your contacts will be prompted to reopen the app in order to restore connections.

This backup system is unique in that it allows you to select your own cloud service provider in order to execute the backup.  We currently support Google Drive, Apple iCloud, and DropBox. We plan to add more providers in future updates, including allowing you to select your own personal SFTP server.

As you have probably seen from the teasers we have been releasing, the next step for the xx messenger is an upgrade of the UX and how the app flows in general.

If you haven’t had a chance to check out these recent teaser videos you can find them all on our YouTube channel here. Just click on the “Videos” tab to see videos in order of most recent release.

As always, we love to hear community feedback so if you have any questions, comments, or just plain old encouragement for the hard working developers, I know they would like to hear from you.

Feel free to drop comments in our Discord #xx-messenger channel, or our friendly neighborhood Telegram channel.

Thanks everyone. Onwards and Upwards!
